My Christmas prayers have been answered:

  1. Great video. Putin once again shows himself the world’s master of PR. He consistently shows an unstoppable sense of humor which he plays to maximum effect (much to his credit).

I thought he didn’t speak English. Did he simply master the lyrics for this song? I’m not sure he was ad-libbing at the very end. But still a great performance.

I noticed that at least one member of the audience, a blonde woman in a sleeveless red dress, was very pointedly not clapping her hands or snapping her fingers to Putin’s music, despite the fact that she was being videotaped. So perhaps Putin’s Russia is not always as repressive as some people think.

    • According to some news reports I’ve seen and am currently too busy/lazy to google, he learned the song as part of his English lessons, which he apparently has on some regular basis. Wasn’t there something in that Time’s Man of the Year article about how he spoke some English, but prefered to do interviews in Russian? Makes sense.

You know, there is no law in Russia that everyone has to constantly fawn over VVP – that kind of hyperbolic rhetoric is so unhelpful. I read and and see all kinds of less than enthousiastic commentary on him/his policies/etc. all of the time.

    • Can I correct my comment: “I want to be Sharon Stone!!!” That is who he is singing to…and doing the thump, thump on his chest for. She’s into it too.

      • I noticed that. Reportedly the two of them were singing arm in arm at the end. Hmmm…

  4. @ Balqis “… Always the bad guy ah?”

No, I don’t think that Putin is always the bad guy. I didn’t realize the setting was a fundraiser for a children’s cause (if that’s what it was), although the backdrop should have clued me in.

Even if Putin is lending his vocals to assist in a children’s cause, it’s still a great PR coup for him, which he has consistently shown that he understands and makes effective use of. My acknowledgement of his PR skills is not cynical.

    • I don’t think his love of animals and children is an act. But I agree he is a PR genius. GENIUS.
