Thoughts on the new look? [Updated]

Filed under: Meta — poemless @ 2:42 PM

[Update: I was about to go blind reading that new font, and my header on the old theme has been magically fixed, by wp gnomes responding to my complaining, I assume. So, a return to the devil we know.]

Da nyet?

I had two real problems with the previous layout: the header wasn’t appearing correctly and blockquotes weren’t very distinct.

I had other minor issues with it: Why was that pen there? Why was that huge white space at the top there? Why does it have to look so … unpolished?

This solves all those minor issues and one of the major ones. Blockquotes are only marginally more distinct now. And I get to keep the red/white/grey motif. However, the font is freakishly small. I like the look of it, but do you find it hard to read?

I’ve also made some other silly and obnoxious changes.

Vote for your preference. Seriously, you better vote. Don’t make me send the UR thugs after you. (And yes, UR will be counting the votes too.)

  1. I voted for the new look. I like it. It’s clean and crisp.

I was going to vote that the font is too small but then I remembered that I picked up my “progressive lens” glasses earlier today (that would be no-line bifocals for you young people) and I put them on and … voila! (or whatever the Russian equivalent of voila is) I could read the whole thing.

    • Thanks for your input. I like the sleekiness of it but … breaking up is hard to do.

(I think “voila!” is a pretty universal word. I suppose you could say “И вот!”)

  2. I liked the pen but was in the minority … I’m a little meh about all the gray (can you change that? do you want to?) … but I really and genuinely like the new subtitle.

Hooray for the absurdity of life!

    • It is very grey isn’t it?

I wish I could make the title red.

      • You could do this if you have access to the style.css folder (as well as change the site font). However, I don’t know if that’s possible if you’re hosted at WordPress.

  3. I can’t answer this poll because the font is so small I can’t read the question.

IMHO, this theme is a fairly bad one – especially because of the small font, which is annoying for me (my vision is OK with contacts) and no doubt frustrating for those with poor vision. I would steal A Good Treaty’s, take a look at Thematic (if it’s available to wordpress.com users).

Another thing to do with style. Now let me emphasize, I have nothing against long posts. However, if you write them, you may be interested in using the “Read More” feature so that the front page looks more compact.

All this is just constructive criticism, don’t get me wrong.

    • I’m not stealing AGT’s look.

About the “more”: I used to do that and just got out of the habit.

    • Also, note, I wasn’t asking for a 3rd theme option, just which do you like better, this one, or the previous one? The previous one?

      • Well, isn’t answering “I can’t answer this poll because the font is so small I can’t read the question” kind of imply that I like the former more. 😉

  4. Good the the size can be changed. I hate websites which use a font with fixed size (usually painfully small).

    • It can’t be changed… 😦

      • Well, in FireFox I only need to press Ctrl + plus or minus keys on the keypad.

        • Still, you shouldn’t have to do that when you visit a new website…

  5. This is what I get for being so unpredictable: my readers can’t even agree with each other.

7 for the new look, 7 for the old.

    • Ah, well – at least you tried. And there’s more red! But we lost the absurdity of life. That makes me a little sad …

      • Wait – no! The absurdity of life is still there – just off to the right.

        How absurd … 😉
